A member of the Air National Guard is on the mend after he was gravely wounded in an ambush-style shooting last month in the US capital.
The family of Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four, report "his head wound is slowly healing and that he's starting to 'look more like himself,'" stated West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey.
The soldier's relatives anticipates the military non-commissioned officer to be in acute care for the coming fortnight, and they feel optimistic about his recovery, said the governor.
Staff Sgt Wolfe was one of a pair of state guardsmen shot when a shooter began shooting in proximity to the presidential residence on 26 November. His fellow guardsmember, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, succumbed to her wounds.
"We continue to ask all West Virginians and the nation's citizens for their prayers!" Morrisey declared.
Morrisey was present at a vigil on Friday evening for the injured soldier at Musselman High School in Inwood, West Virginia, where the guardsman was once a student.
A clergyman at the vigil shared a message from the soldier's parents, his family.
"It is clear to us that there is a difficult journey to go," they expressed, according to local news outlet outlets.
"However our belief keeps us optimistic. We remain grateful for the prayers and the encouragement from people all over the globe."
Earlier in the week, the governor said Staff Sgt Wolfe had responded to a nurse with a thumbs-up and was able to wiggle his feet.
Police have formally accused the suspected shooter, an Afghan national named the suspect, with premeditated homicide and attempted murder.
Before coming to the United States in two years ago, he was once a member of a special forces unit in a paramilitary group that operated alongside US forces in the South Asian nation.
The injured airman was one of 2,000 militia personnel whom the former president dispatched to the nation's capitol in August as part of his immigration and crime-related crackdown in Democratic-led cities.
Following the incident, Trump said he wanted an additional five hundred National Guard troops sent to the nation's capital.
The former presidential office has also referenced the shooting as a justification for additional restrictive policies.
They have cancelled all citizenship ceremonies for foreign nationals from 19 countries that were part of a entry restriction implemented over the summer, including the suspect's home country.
