The major American pharmacy chain Rite Aid has declared the closure of its final outlets.

This past Saturday, the firm's online portal was replaced with a announcement confirming: "Every Rite Aid stores have currently shut down. We appreciate our dedicated patrons for their many years of support." The website also provided a option for customers to request their pharmacy files.

Founded in 1962, the firm was once a leading pharmacy chains in the United States. In its heyday, Rite Aid had around 5,000 outlets.

But in the past few years, the chain encountered economic challenges and a federal probe. As of last Friday less than 100 stores were still open.

Rite Aid had filed for bankruptcy in October 2023 and again in May 2025.

The company also encountered legal issues over its involvement in the prescription painkiller epidemic. In 2022, Rite Aid agreed to pay up to $30 million to settle legal claims claiming it fueled the flow of painkillers in the United States.

The following year, in its 2023 submission, the firm stated that restructuring would help it "settle litigation disputes."

Rite Aid also encountered a Justice Department complaint in which officials claimed the company's stores processed unlawful orders for oxycodone and fentanyl. The firm agreed to settle in July 2024.

Additional US pharmacy retailers have likewise been closing outlets across the country, though different factors have been cited.

From 2021 onward, CVS has closed more than 1,000 stores as part of a longer term move.

In a similar vein, Walgreens, which was not long ago purchased by investment group Sycamore Partners, closed 500 stores in the last twelve months.

Experts have raised concerns about growing "drugstore deserts" in the United States, where a large number of people reside without a drugstore nearby and must commute to get prescriptions dispensed.
