In a major move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a two-year contract with the accomplished player.
The contract grants a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside salaries of sixteen million for the next season and $17 million for the following year.
Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:
The contract also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his approval and makes him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the contract. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between Japan and the U.S..
As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows are also entitled to a additional payment of 15% triggered incentive payments.
Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to represent the Chicago franchise, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.
Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 soon, bolsters a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a difficult season, placing last in the AL Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.
The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 home runs, surpassing the longstanding record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's elusive Triple Crown.
His most recent NPB campaign was limited to just 56 appearances due to an muscle issue. Even with recording often, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 RBIs.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing mainly at first, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.
Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending two-base hit that scored two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The very next day in the championship game against the Team USA, he slugged a equalizing home run in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.
The new White Sox addition is slated to be officially presented at a introductory event on Monday.
