The Tory leadership is reportedly planning to unveil a new border control unit modelled on the divisive American ICE agency established under President Trump.
Conservative chief Kemi Badenoch is expected to announce this policy as her party prepares for its yearly gathering following a time of historically low public support. The planned "removals force" would be responsible for deporting approximately 150,000 people annually as part of efforts to tackle unauthorized migration.
The Conservative leader will declare that the taskforce would receive £1.6bn and "sweeping new powers" if the Tory party win the upcoming general election. These powers would allegedly encompass the ability to deploy facial recognition technology without warning to help identify those subject to deportation from the UK.
Under the outlined measures, the enforcement body would work closely with police forces. Officers would be mandated to conduct immigration checks on all persons they detain or arrest, Badenoch is expected to add.
"We must address the scourge of unauthorized migration into Britain and protect our frontiers. That is why the Tory party are presenting a thorough and credible fresh strategy to resolve this situation."
Badenoch will assert that the Ice model has proved to be a "successful approach" in deporting migrants who have entered without authorization the United States. Media accounts indicate Ice removed nearly 200,000 individuals during the first seven months of Trump's second presidency. However, the organization has also encountered widespread criticism for detaining authorized immigrants and reportedly focusing on people based on their ethnic background.
Immigration is anticipated as a central topic at this annual Conservative conference, which commences on the weekend. The removals force is understood to be a cornerstone of a new "borders plan" that the party leader will announce to delegates in the conference city.
Review of Home Office figures shows that 34,401 people have crossed the Channel in small boats so far this year. This suggests that the current year is track to set new highs for the most arrivals in a single year.
Badenoch is also expected to announce a comprehensive reform of the asylum system as part of her immigration strategy. She will suggest granting refugee status only to those who have been personally targeted by a overseas regime. Those who have escaped conflict or "less tolerant" regulations on faith and sexuality would be excluded, she will say, adding that "very limited" people would qualify for refugee status under the stricter regulations.
The proposals would also abolish migration courts, with rulings instead made exclusively by the interior ministry. There would be limited rights of appeal, which would be available solely in cases where government staff have operated beyond their legal powers.
The measures would also prevent legal aid to those fighting migration appeals. The party leader is likely to claim that lawyers have "defrauded" the UK by "instructing" applicants. She will argue there is "no need for legal counsel" as people "ought to honestly state" the facts about their situation.
Badenoch announced that the Conservatives would remove the UK from the European convention on human rights if the party returns to government at the forthcoming election.
"I have not reached this conclusion easily, but it is clear that it is essential to safeguard our frontiers, our veterans and our residents."
The Tory chief faces sustained pressure on immigration from the conservative wing of her political group as polls repeatedly indicate that Reform could win the next election. Reform's leader has promised to leave the human rights convention and deport up to 600,000 individuals during its first parliamentary term if it gains power.
"The opposition have nothing but declarations that collapse on arrival. Our 'enhanced frontier' strategy is serious and credible and backed by a comprehensive legal analysis. That is the distinction the future Tory administration will deliver."
