An FBI officer has been allegedly placed on administrative leave after refusing to participate in a public escort of the bureau’s ex- director James Comey, according to US media outlets.
The officer faced suspension for failure to follow orders, when the individual deemed the proposed action to be unprofessional.
James Comey faced charges in Virginia on a pair of federal counts a short time after Donald Trump called on law enforcement to more vigorously investigate his opponents, including Mr. Comey.
FBI officials had reportedly discussed sending physically imposing agents wearing Kevlar vests to escort Mr. Comey to his initial hearing in Alexandria next week.
In a public suspect transfer, law enforcement publicly transports a person charged of a crime, often in sight of media cameras. This practice is common in high profile cases across the United States.
James Comey is set to appear in court on 9 October to be formally charged on charges of lying to Congress and impeding a congressional proceeding. This is when, his indictments will be formally read out to him before a judge.
Mr. Comey is charged with lying to a Senate committee in 2020 about whether he approved a leak of classified information to the media.
He headed the FBI during a turbulent period, when the agency was investigating two prominent matters: favoring Trump election interference by Russia in 2016 and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a personal email system.
He has denied the criminal allegations and stated that he has “great confidence in the federal judicial system”.
If convicted, he could face up to 60 months in prison.
Donald Trump fired Mr. Comey during his initial presidency in 2017, while the FBI was investigating Russian interference—a investigation that subsequently found the Trump campaign did not collaborate with the Kremlin in the election. Mr. Comey has been a target of Trump’s anger since that time.
The indictments against Mr. Comey were submitted just days before the five-year-long statute of limitations would have lapsed, and days after the president appointed a new top prosecutor to the region—Lindsey Halligan, who previously worked as Trump’s personal attorney.
Trump assigned Halligan after expressing frustration that “nothing is being done” against his opponents. In a online statement on social media, he urged US Attorney General Pam Bondi to look into Mr. Comey, along with New York Attorney General Letitia James and Democratic Senator Adam Schiff, who oversaw his first impeachment trial.
“We must not postpone any longer, it’s killing our standing and integrity,” Trump stated in the post.
It is uncertain if the plans to bring in Comey with FBI agents will proceed. His legal team were reportedly planning to travel with Mr. Comey to his hearing—a standard practice for a non-violent criminal case.
As of now, the situation is still unresolved, with additional updates expected in the coming days.
