Back when I was my late teens, my morning travel was on an crowded coach. It remained crowded and invariably became completely full by the time I got on.
During a certain commute, I started experiencing terribly ill as the bus swayed around every turn. I repeatedly told myself to endure for a few more stops so the bus could reached where I needed to get off, at which point I could make a mad dash to the closest public restroom to throw up.
As we neared the avenue close to the destination as I understood I was unable to last. In an instant, it seemed a fog descended upon me. The world became white and really quiet; as if someone cut the sound. I thought, “I am about to pass out”.
Fortunately, I stood close to the driver on the bus, so I managed several steps toward the driver and requested that the driver to open the doors, informing him that I was about to vomit. He promptly opened the entrance and I weakly exited onto the sidewalk.
My intention was to not get sick in view of a busy multi-lane road, so I picked myself up and started trying to walk across to the park across the road, thinking I could I’d at least be able to discreetly hide among some shrubs to vomit. But then I likely lost consciousness. I sensed my body but walking was impossible or see properly, leading me to start dragging myself toward the park.
“Everything alright, love?”
Right then, I got scooped up. I felt a strong arm supporting me and a man’s voice asked, “Everything alright, love?” I managed to tell the unknown man that I required to get to a bathroom. So he virtually supported my weight over to a close-by structure and placed me into the female bathroom. He wanted to know whether I required him to stay with me but I said no.
A few minutes later, I felt better to the point of sitting on the toilet and from the other side of the stall I heard his voice asking, “Are you OK, love? Can I get you something?” I wasn’t able to get up just then but I was able to say thank you and following a brief period regained the function of my legs. I made my way home and then spent the following days recovering from what turned out to be a nasty tummy bug.
I never glimpsed the stranger’s face – only his legs and the big steelwork tools container he was carrying – but he saved me, when I was completely helpless.
Frequently, society has a way of making you self-protective, pushy, and rivalrous. His act was the type of kindness that reverses that emotional callousness. He demonstrated that people’s natural inclination leans toward compassion, a quality I adore in other people.
