Los Angeles Dodgers Survive in Canada to Set Up Decisive Game 7 in World Series

The World Series is going to a decisive seventh game following the Dodgers kept their repeat dreams intact Friday night with a three to one win over the Blue Jays in Game 6.

The defending champions ended Toronto’s late-game comeback with a thrilling final double play, stunning a Rogers Centre audience that had come ready to celebrate the team's first title in over three decades.

Sixth Game Summary

Los Angeles produced all of their scoring in the third inning. With two outs, Ohtani was intentionally walked before Will Smith hit a two-bagger to left field to score Edman. Freeman drew a walk to load the bases, and Betts delivered with a two-run single to the opposite field, handing the Dodgers a three-run lead.

That key hit broke a playoff dry spell and rekindled the title holders' aspirations of becoming the first repeat World Series winners since the New York Yankees won three consecutive from 1998 through 2000.

Mound Battle

Gausman had been nearly unhittable to that point, striking out half a dozen of the first seven Dodgers he confronted. He struck out eight through three innings, matching a World Series record, but the third-frame rally proved costly. The Toronto ace ended with eight strikeouts over six frames, allowing three earned runs on three safeties and two walks.

Yamamoto, meanwhile, was steady again under pressure. The righty outpitched Gausman for the second time in a week, allowing a single run on five base hits over six frames with six Ks. He improved to four wins and one loss this postseason with a 1.56 ERA.

The only run against him resulted from George Springer two-out single in the third inning, driving in Addison Barger, who had hit a double previously in the frame. That single offered a brief spark in his return to the lineup after sitting out a pair of contests with an oblique injury.

Bullpen Heroics

From there, the Dodgers’ bullpen took over. Rookie Justin Wrobleski got out of a tight spot in the seventh inning, and another rookie Rōki Sasaki pitched into the ninth before hitting Alejandro Kirk to open the inning. Barger followed with a double that became wedged under the outfield wall, forcing base runners to stay at second and third.

Glasnow, the Dodgers' third game starter, came on in a relief role and got a pop fly before Giménez hit a line drive to left field. Hernández made the catch and fired to second to double off the runner, clinching the win and earning Glasnow his first career save.

Next Up: Game 7

The series now boils down to a single contest. Max Scherzer will start for the Blue Jays, making him the sole active hurler to start multiple seventh games of the World Series after doing so in the 2019 season with the Nationals. The 40-year-old signed a single-season contract to chase another championship and has been a outspoken presence throughout this postseason.

The Dodgers, aiming to become baseball’s first back-to-back champions in almost 25 years, are expected to rely on Shohei Ohtani for a brief appearance.
