An extensive manufacturing complex situated on the outskirts of the capital is addressing nuclear contamination after a government team detected presence of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 production plants within the area, that includes companies shipping chilled marine products.
This discovery has led to emergency cleanup operations and the relocation of local residents, following a similar pollution scare in the United States that was linked to the Indonesian facilities.
A major multinational retailer is one of the companies that have withdrawn items from their shelves after the finding.
The country's officials initiated an inquiry when the American FDA identified Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a consignment of frozen breaded shrimp sent by an Indonesian firm.
The FDA released an advisory advising distributors and retailers to dispose of the goods and not sell it, even though the found amount was well under the agency's action limit. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had found would not pose an acute risk to the public.
The authority explained: “The primary impact on health of concern following extended, ongoing low dose contact (eg through eating of contaminated products or liquid over a period) is an elevated risk of the disease, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”
Radiation scans revealed at least 22 plants in the manufacturing zone were affected. The official taskforce did not identify the twenty-one other production sites, but confirmed they would immediately receive decontamination processes conducted by the country's nuclear agency.
A senior official declared that people residing in strongly polluted zones would be relocated until the location was cleaned, emphasizing that the safety of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.
Medical officials also conducted checks on nearby workers and residents located near the manufacturing estate, finding nine people who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. They were referred to a hospital before being allowed to return home.
The affected sites will immediately undergo decontamination procedures by the national nuclear agency. Authorities have further selected the site of a scrap metal plant as an containment center for polluted goods.
The country, which has no atomic power plants or weapons program, suspects that Caesium-137 may have entered the nation from overseas.
An official spokesperson told reporters that recycled metal shipments were the likely source of pollution and confirmed the authorities would promptly impose restrictions on metal waste imports. He said that vehicles were also being checked for potential exposure as they traveled through the area.
Caesium-137 is a dangerous nuclear element that usually appears in the ecosystem as a result of atomic experiments or accidents, like the Fukushima disaster or Chernobyl. Small amounts are present in earth, products and air.
The level detected in the chilled prawns was far lower than FDA intervention levels, but the authority explained prolonged exposure to including low doses of the element was associated to an elevated chance of cancer.
The recalled shrimp was available at major store outlets across at least a 12 US states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
