The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.
It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this latest sequel, even though dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a brief appearance is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the precise instant he received the news from the series creator.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a part that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are somehow still living in a bizarre communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by classic genre films, also is on the table.
Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
