Among all the mature animated films I have ever viewed, nothing has stuck with me quite like the dread-soaked finale of a viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, the Spanish filmmaker created a dark, bleak and frequently brutal universe with some tiny , desolate twinges of optimism.
Although Unicorn Wars feels like it stemmed from a drive to expand the medium even more, the filmmaker stated that it was actually a try to express a global, multicultural theme regarding “the mutual source of all wars.”
This theme is expressed via a band of colorful pastel bears , obviously inspired by a well-known series of cuddly characters.
Maturing in a society built around militarism as well as the war machine, a lot of the bears are consumed by slaughtering the mythical beasts, because of a holy book which states the bears they were once masters of the woods, until the unicorns forced them out.
A few did not entirely bought into the propaganda, and prefer to try out narcotics or fornicate in the forest.
Unlike their cuddly equivalents, these colorful critters show sexual organs and clear libidos.
For a certain particularly cruel, pessimistic creature, the character Bluey, the conflict against unicorns becomes a route toward dominance — and particularly to supremacy over his softer, more compassionate sibling the bear Tubby.
This bear acts as a tormentor and a seeming psychopath , and as terror takes over his group and claims his teammates sequentially, he grabs increasingly control personally, via progressively bloody, destructive ways.
Simultaneously, these mythical beings are experiencing their own nightmare, through a growing, harmful creature in their habitat.
“Initially, it feels like a humorous movie,” the director commented. “But then it turns into a more serious and sad film. And ultimately, it transforms into a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars commences similar to one of the most whimsical features from a legendary animator, which find a wicked pleasure in permitting drawn beings curse, fire weapons, or have intimate relations.
Afterward it evolves into more akin to a more grim movie by that same director, including ever more graphic violence , a noticeable relation to genuine horror of war.
By the end, it’s a complete extreme drama massacre.
The fear that makes the film a perfect Halloween viewing starts well before than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is suited for the devoted lovers of violence, for lovers of extreme cinema who desire to see a film they have not viewed until now, and can endure a plot that pulls unflinching brutality.
Watch it with the lights off with no disturbances, and the conclusion will dig deep within you and stay with you.
