The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new initialism came to light a few months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, per insights from doctors like paediatricians. Typically, it is unusual for medical staff to attend to a child who has seen the death of their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare Despite a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that atrocities are continuing. Officials rejects these claims, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is implicated in. But while young survivors are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what unity looks like.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Profound Human Cost

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on togetherness has transformed into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
