The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the network.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The previous series concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only came recently.
Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.
Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."
"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.
The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.
The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.
However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
