NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his triumph in November.

"This decision came down to the security of my family and the need to focusing my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will always live within me and my work," he added.

Political Debate

In his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

But his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his modest Astoria apartment.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
