This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
