Although not quite at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
